What Lies Beneath The Skin

Remember the youthful taunt, “Your epidermis is showing!”? Were you fooled into frantically covering yourself, only to realize that the epidermis is the scientific term of the outermost layer of skin? In fact, not only is your epidermis showing, but so is everybody’s epidermis! As long as your epidermis is showing, why not put to use good practices to make sure it is appearing at its’ best?
One of the reasons skin anti wrinkle creams are such a popular item is because no one wants to have their wrinkles showing. Wrinkles are the first visible sign of aging. No one wants to look older than their real age, so that is why anti wrinkle treatments are such a booming market. But to understand aging, we need to look beneath the skin.
If we imagine skin like the layers of an onion, the outermost layer, the epidermis, is the visible layer. It is the barrier that covers our entire body. It is thin, only measuring on average a millimeter (mm) of thickness. The epidermis consists mainly of keratinocytes, but also has melanocytes (cells responsible for producing skin pigment) and sensory cells that respond to touch and those that have immune functions. Keratinocytes, as the name suggests, produce keratin, a protein that gives flexibility to skin and helps waterproof the skin surface. As cells dies, they are pushed upwards towards the surface of the skin. The uppermost surface does not have a vascular supply, and most dead cells are found there.
The layer beneath the epidermis is the dermis. It can be up to 3 mm thick. This layer contains collagen, elastin and reticular fibers. These proteins form the lattice-like structural support that is so important in keeping skin flexible, firm, and elastic. This layer also has capillaries that directly feed and nourish the lower layers of the epidermis. The dermis is often called the “true skin.”
Beneath the epidermis, the lowest lining layer is the subcutaneous fat. This also provides some structure to skin. As we age and lose the fat, our skin also tends to sag.
The epidermis is pocked with minuscule openings called pores. There are also hair follicles and sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands produce oil that naturally lubricates skin. As you may suspect, as we age, hormones change and we produce less oil from these glands. This also adds to skin wrinkles and aging.
Now that you have a basic understanding of skin biology, you will see that all components from each layer of skin has a role to play in the development of skin wrinkles. Though anti wrinkle creams can temporarily plump up the outermost epidermal layers, many times the damage has occurred in the lower layers. Loss of collagen and elastin in the dermal layers leads to skin wrinkles. The lack of keratin-producing cells in the epidermal layers also decreases skin flexibility, causing wrinkles. Thus, wrinkles appear on the surface, but the cause actually lies in what is beneath the skin.

What action should take if you have fats

You can take action right now by simply limiting your consumption of fatty foods to 15% or less. A good way to do this is to replace these foods with high-calorie, low-fat sweet fruits.
For instance, if you usually eat avocados with your greens, try peaches sliced up on top instead. You can even make completely fat-free dressings from fruits and veggies. Here is a personal favorite of mine:

Women However, eating an excess of either cooked or raw fats produces a host of problems for the consumer:
#1: Fat takes a long time to digest and it remains in the bloodstream for a long time. When too much fat is consumed, the excess fat in the bloodstream interferes with insulin production from the pancreas. Under normal circumstances, the insulin would attach itself to sugar molecules within the blood in order to carry them to the cells. With the fat in the way, the insulin does not reach the sugar. The pancreas becomes fatigued from producing extra insulin. The blood-sugar level becomes elevated because the sugar cannot be transported out of the blood by the insulin. As you can see, sugar metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes and Candida are not caused by a lack of insulin or too much sugar. They can be directly linked to an excess of fat.

How Much Fat?
Dr. Graham, author of The 80/10/10 Diet and a leader within the raw food movement, advocates a diet of 10% fat or less. Personally, this is the guideline that I follow and recommend as well. Anymore fat than this and it is likely that you are not consuming enough simple carbohydrates in the form of fruit.
10% of calories from fat is surprising to many people. However, many reputable sources (including the world-renowned Pritikin Center) recommend that only 10-15% of calories come from fat.
Many people around the world eat diets low in fat. In The China Study, the longest nutritional study ever conducted, Dr. Campbell studies people living in rural China who eat as low as 6% of calories from fat!
It is not surprising that in these areas you find much lower rates of heart disease, atherosclerosis, breast cancer, etc. compared to more industrialized places like the US and Britain.
On most days, I do not eat any overt fats and on those days I average about 5% of my calories from fat. I’ve never experienced any adverse reactions from limiting my fat intake.
In fact, I have only experienced great benefits since limiting fat, such as weight loss, increased energy, deeper sleep, mental focus, and improved digestion.

The Truth About a High Fat Raw Food Diet

What if I came to you and said,
“I have the absolute best diet in the world. You will lose weight, you will have more energy, and you will prevent and even reverse any and all diseases. AND you get to eat 60% OR MORE of your calories from fat!”
You would probably a) laugh in my face, b) turn and run, or c) ask if I was a raw foodist.
That’s right, folks. The average raw foodist eats 60% of his or her calories from fat! That’s over HALF of one’s daily calories, all from fat!
Are you surprised? I know I sure was when I went raw. I could not believe that there were people actually promoting a high fat diet when all the evidence for a healthy diet pointed to the exact opposite!
So why are so many raw foodists eating so much fatty foods? What it boils down to is the “If It’s Raw, It’s Healthy” fallacy.
If It’s Raw, It’s Healthy
Many raw foodists will argue that raw fats are much healthier than cooked fats and do not result in such problems as heart disease and atherosclerosis. As long as it’s raw, you can eat as much avocado, nuts, and seeds as you want.
Yes, it’s true that raw fats are much better than cooked fats. Cooked fatty foods have had the majority of the water removed and many necessary micronutrients along with that water (not to mention all the nutrients that are destroyed by the heat alone).
Once fats are cooked, they quickly go rancid and produce harmful carcinogens. The more oxygen that these foods come into contact with, the more rancid they become and the more dangerous carcinogens they produce.

Vitamin D Supplementation: Timing and Dosage Still Uncertain

Although some observational studies have associated higher calcium intake and especially higher vitamin D intake and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with lower breast cancer risk, no randomized trial has evaluated these relationships.
Postmenopausal women (n = 36,282) who were enrolled in a Women's Health Initiative clinical trial were randomly assigned to 1,000 mg of elemental calcium with 400 IU of vitamin D3 daily or placebo for a mean of 7.0 years to determine the effects of supplement use on incidence of hip fracture. Mammograms and breast exams were serially conducted. Invasive breast cancer was a secondary outcome. Baseline serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were assessed in a nested case-control study of 1,067 case patients and 1,067 control subjects. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the risk of breast cancer associated with random assignment to calcium with vitamin D3. Associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D serum levels and total vitamin D intake, body mass index (BMI), recreational physical activity, and breast cancer risks were evaluated using logistic regression models. Statistical tests were two-sided.
Invasive breast cancer incidence was similar in the two groups (528 supplement vs 546 placebo; hazard ratio = 0.96; 95% confidence interval = 0.85-1.09). In the nested case-control study, no effect of supplement group assignment on breast cancer risk was seen. Baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were modestly correlated with total vitamin D intake (diet and supplements) (r = 0.19, P
Calcium and vitamin D supplementation did not reduce invasive breast cancer incidence in postmenopausal women. In addition, 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were not associated with subsequent breast cancer risk. These findings do not support a relationship between total vitamin D intake and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with breast cancer risk.

A Working Mother's Experience of Extended Breastfeeding

When I discovered that I was unexpectedly expecting, I decided that I would give breastfeeding a try. My late mother bottle-fed all three of her children, so I had no idea whether or not I would be 'able' to do so. During the pre-natal period, mothers are led to believe that breastfeeding is exceptionally difficult, and the message we are given is that breastfeeding is usually safely abandoned after about six weeks! But I decided to throw caution to the wind and try anyway.
Soon after Maryanne was born, the midwives in the hospital showed me how to breastfeed her. I could not believe how easy it was! We both took to it like ducks to water, and soon Maryanne was thriving. I have found breastfeeding to be the most natural thing in the world, and certainly one of the most rewarding.
However, we attended my ante-natal class reunion when she was about four weeks old, and several mothers had already stopped breastfeeding – one had never even bothered trying! I have been in contact with several of these mothers since then, and most of them gave up breastfeeding at around six weeks, thinking that this was sufficient to set their babies up for life! So the midwives' unintentional message had got through: you are meant to breastfeed your baby for six weeks, and then give up!
Unfortunately, many mothers today are forced by their financial obligations to return to work at around the six week mark. I must admit, the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my entire life was to return to work three months after the birth of my daughter – as all my instincts were screaming at me that my most important duty in life – indeed, for the next twenty years – is to care for and nurture her.

'Natural' Progesterone - why this is not the answer

In 1966 Dr Robert Wilson, a New York gynaecologist, wrote a book called Feminine Forever extolling the virtues of oestrogen replacement for women at the menopause. By taking it for the rest of our lives, he declared, we could partake forever of the ‘fountain of youth’ as he described it. Dr Wilson, a charming man, whom I once met, was certainly sincere enough in his desire to help women who experienced difficulties at the menopause. But it was his theories, expounded in this best-selling book, that created the concept of the menopause as a deficiency disease, an illness which could have dire consequences if left untreated. “Women will be emancipated only when the shackles of hormonal deprivation are loosened,” burbled the foreword written by another eminent doctor. The message was that we ignored the prospect of oestrogen replacement at our peril. It had a huge impact on popular health thinking at the time. Dr Wilson got quite carried away by it all, claiming there was ample evidence that the whole course of history has been changed not only by the presence of oestrogen but by its absence. Unstable oestrogen-starved women, he postulated, were a misery to themselves and everyone else, causing, at the extreme, alcoholism, drug addiction, divorce and broken homes. As you can imagine this changed the thinking of many women and doctors for decades. Oestrogen replacement became part of mainstream medicine, the great saviour. Then disaster struck.
Twenty years on doctors found that cases of endometrial cancer had risen greatly (to between four and eight times higher than those in non-hormone users) among the early generation of oestrogen takers. Progestogens were then added to help balance out the side effects of the oestrogen so that ‘oestrogen replacement therapy’ became ‘hormone replacement therapy’ and most women were required to take both the hormones. Everyone became a little more cautious about hailing oestrogen as the best thing since sliced bread.
All this happened decades ago. But we are now today seeing a similar pattern developing over another hormone, progesterone – or natural progesterone as its growing number of fans prefer to describe it. Enter the new hyped-up wonder hormone, now hailed as the real and ‘natural’ hormone replacement. Is history merely repeating itself? Are we now going through another phase where everyone is jumping on the bandwagon by promoting progesterone as safe and effective before the true picture has been established?
According to its supporters progesterone can help bone density and ‘cure’ an amazing selection of menopausal symptoms. Here is a list of some of them:

Similar claims, of course, were made when oestrogen was first introduced. It was only twenty years later that questions arose about the possible side effects. The whole history of health and medicine demonstrates the wisdom of skepticism about any ‘wonder’ substance that hits the headlines. I am suspicious about anything that is claimed to cure such a wide range of symptoms. And what is so ‘natural’ about the idea of women taking progesterone? Production of both oestrogen and progesterone decline at the menopause. And while we go on making some oestrogen all our lives the production of progesterone will stop completely. So are we seriously suggesting that nature has got this all wrong? At a time in our lives when both hormones are dropping and progesterone can be absent, why then should we be adding it back in? Progesterone is needed to maintain a pregnancy, so we can understand why the body doesn’t need it at the menopause. Why replace it?
What, actually, could be more unnatural than doctoring ourselves with progesterone, when Mother Nature has arranged for its removal from the body in the normal course of events? The thinking behind the growing popularity of progesterone therapy is as follows. As inhabitants of an industrialised world we are being constantly bombarded by xenoestrogens – substances which have an oestrogenic effect on the body. These xenoestrogens are nearly all petrochemically based and can come from packaging, plastics, foods and pesticides. They have been found in formula baby milk, presumed to have originated from the packaging used to contain the milk. They are believed to have a devastating effect on fertility, reproduction and health for both humans and wildlife. A number of disturbing developments are increasingly blamed on these chemicals. In the West it is reckoned that men’s sperm count may have dropped by 50 per cent in the last ten years. Other studies have linked these chemicals to the increase in breast and testicular cancers and to endometriosis, a painful uterine disorder. This major environmental factor lies behind the theory of oestrogen dominance.
The suggestion is that many of us are suffering from oestrogen dominance because of the increased amount of xenoestrogens we encounter daily. So, the argument goes, the answer is to balance all this unwanted oestrogen with progesterone – natural progesterone. I believe that our lifestyles and our environment have a profound effect on our hormones. That is why we must take a lot of care over our nutrition, which has such an impact on the body’s biochemical processes. I don’t however believe that the answer is to introduce ever more hormones into our bodies. And the question we should ask is, just how ‘natural’ is progesterone anyway?
